I bet you're here because you've been hearing more and more about reusable panty liners and your interest has been piqued enough to find out more. I've been using reusables for a few years now and I am a convert! Let me answer all of your questions so that you feel confident to give them a try.
We all know what panty liners are, they've been on our monthly shopping lists for years. But for all that time, we've only ever really had one option. You know what I mean, the plastic filled, perfumed and chlorine bleached liners that are then individually wrapped in plastic and then packaged in more plastic! Well, now there's another option... reusable panty liners.
Reusable panty liners are made from layers of absorbent cotton, with a waterproof outer layer to prevent any leaks. Once you've worn them, they can then be washed and re-used hundreds of times.
You might have heard them called by other names such as menstrual cloth liners, cotton sanitary liners, mama cloths or washable pads.
You'll Save Money
Although reusable panty liners are an initial investment, you will save money over time. Just think of how you much you spend every month on disposable panty liners. What does that add up to over a year? What about over 5 years? If you look after your reusables, you can wear them for years before they need replacing.
They are better for your body
The reusable pads available at Reuseful NZ are made from unbleached organic cotton. That means no pesticides were used to grow the cotton and no bleach was used to make them look whiter than white. They also contain no perfume. What does that mean for you and your body? A chemical free liner that is soft, breathable and comfortable sitting against your lady bits.
Disposables in comparison contain lots of chemicals, which can easily cause irritation and the plastics within them don't allow your most delicate area to breathe!
They are better for the planet
Did you know that disposable panty liners take hundreds of years to break down? And that's just what they do. They break up into smaller and smaller pieces until the pieces are so small that you can't really see them any more. But they're still there... you've heard of micro-plastics right?
The manufacturing process of creating disposables also pollutes our waterways, air and wildlife habitats... all for one single-use! Not to mention all the plastic wrappers and packaging they come with.
Reusables are manufactured with more consideration and then can be re-used time and time again. And then once you're finished with them, because they are made from cotton they can be composted at home.
The Hannahpads that I use have snap domes on their wings that you wrap around your underwear and pop together. The outer leakproof layer also has tiny silicone dots all over it to provide some friction between the panty liner and your underwear to stop it from sliding. In all honesty, they don't move once in place.
No, they don't. They are made from organic cotton, but the outer layer is made from a waterproof, leakproof fabric. This is to prevent leaks. All these layers are then sewn together in a particular way so that no leaks can slip through.
There is a little bit of extra work involved to keep your panty liners clean, but it's pretty easy and takes just a couple of minutes. First, rinse off as much discharge/blood as you can, lather up some laundry soap on the gusset and leave your reusables to soak until you're ready to wash them. You don't need a fancy soaking bucket, just an ice cream tub will do. Then, when you do a load of laundry, throw your reusables in the machine on a cold wash. Hang to dry, preferably in direct sunlight as the uv rays naturally help to remove any remaining stains.
Here's a useful video below of how to wash your reusable pads and panty liners.
Yes! Just like disposables, you don't want to wear the same pad for too long during the day. And you want to make sure pads are clean and dry before wearing them. But otherwise, yes, they are very safe for your body.
Here at Reuseful I stock Hannahpads, because they are the pads and panty liners that I spent my hard earned cash on and they are the pads that I personally had the best experience with. They are made to the highest quality, they are comfortable, breathable and easy to clean.
Whether you wear panty liners every day, or whether you wear them at the end of your period, these are by far the best I've found and I highly recommend them.
